Although largely eclipsed by technological progress, the constantly evolving farming sector remains a vital component of the global economy. Ovine, cattle and poultry livestock units are increasing year by year. Consequently, a huge amount of animal waste is produced. Indeed, more than 55 billion tons of manure are generated every year from animal feeding operations. Animal waste has the potential to introduce pollutants such as nutrients (i.e. nitrate and phosphorous), organic matter, sediments, pathogens heavy metals, hormones, antibiotics and ammonia to the waters we use for drinking, swimming and fishing
