India's overall onion production to increase by seven per cent to 24.45 million tonnes in the current 2019-20 crop year. India's onion crops has been grown in 12.93 lakh hectare in the 2019-20 crop year (July-June), slightly higher than 12.20 lakh hectare achieved during the previous year. Onion is grown during both kharif (summer) and rabi (winter) season. Currently,  around 22 percent damage in kharif onion crop due to late monsoon rains and later excess rainfall, which led to supply constraint and sharp rise in prices.

The major Onion producing states are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh in the country. These States account for almost 90% of the total Onion production in the country.

The arrivals were 51.60 % less in June 2020 as compared to June 2019, but higher (8.42 %) than May, 2020, indicating subdued demand this year due to COVID-19 pandemic. Though arrivals are lower this year in comparison with last year; good production and subdued demand has ensured that the wholesale prices this year are not higher than last year.
