Gujarat is located on the western coast of India and has the longest coastline of 1,600 km in the country. Gujarat is one of the high-growth states in the country. Gujarat is a leader in industrial sectors such as chemicals, petrochemicals, dairy, drugs and pharmaceuticals, cement and ceramics, gems and jewellery, textiles, and engineering. The industrial sector comprises over 800 large industries and 453,339 micro, small and medium enterprises.

Gujarat has over 3,300 pharmaceutical manufacturing units, which contributed 30-35% to India’s pharma sector’s turnover and around 28% to India’s pharma export during 2018-19. Gujarat has achieved the distinction of being one of the most industrially developed states. It accounts for 5% of the total Indian population and contributes about a quarter of India’s goods export. The state ranks first in terms of the total area covered under special economic zone (SEZs) in India. It is also a leading SEZ state with the highest geographical area of 29,423.9 hectares under SEZ development.

Gujarat is one of the highly developed states in the country and its agricultural strength lies in its diversity of climate, strong marketing infrastructure, enterprising farmer base and, 1600 km coastal belt. The state has more than 50% of the land under the net cultivable area.

In the current times, the state’s agriculture economy has witnessed a shift towards high-value crops like cotton, groundnuts, fruits and vegetables, and condiments, and spices from low-value cereals and other crops. Gujarat is the leading producer of groundnut in the country and the third-largest producer of milk.

  • Food Processing Units: More than 30,000 food processing units are operating in Gujarat providing employment to over 1 million people.
  • Agri-Export Zones: A total of 20 agri-export zones, with a focus on mango and vegetables and sesame seeds, have been identified by the State Government, 15 for Mango and Vegetables and five for sesame seeds
  • There are 194 Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market yards and sub-market yards in the state.
  • 560 cold storage and fish processing units with a capacity of 20,30,873 MT
  • 207 warehouses across 45 centers
  • One irradiation unit in Bavla, Gujarat
  • One Air cargo complex for Food exports
  • Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor which passes over Gujarat

Amul is a market leader in butter, whole milk, cheese, ice cream, dairy whitener, condensed milk, saturated fats, and long-life milk. In 2019-20, the company witnessed an increase of 17% in its turnover with Rs 38,550 crore (US$ 5.52 billion)
